Different Types of Dinosaurs:
How Many Different Dinosaur Types Are
There?
How many different
types of dinosaurs are there? Well, it depends on how you count them.
You can either type count the age they lived in, like Jurassic
and Cretaceous, which I call dinosaur history, (you can learn about
that on my dinosaur history page), or
you can talk about what the different types of dinosaurs ate: were they
herbivores
(plant eaters), carnivores
(meat eaters), ominovores
(ate both meat and plants).
I'm an ominovore.
How about you?
I sometimes like to
talk about different types of dinosaurs in this way:
Were they:
- Killer and
scavenger dinosaurs like the raptors,
spinosaurus and T-rex,
- Giant plant
eater dinosaurs, like the apatosaurus
and diplodocus
- Armored dinosaurs
(with plates and horns like the stegosaurs
and yangshuanosaurus)
- Duck bills
dinosaurs like the iguanodons and maiasaura, or
- Flying reptiles
like the pteranodon and other pterosaurs (I like the quetzalacoatlus).
- And although they
don't really count as different types of dinosaurs, because they lived
at the same time as the dinosaurs, I also like to learn about the prehistoric
sea creature types like the plesiosaurus
and the liopleurodon, ichthyosaurus,
kronosaurus, and the weird-shaped
elasmosaurus.
You can learn about
the different types of dinosaurs on their own pages. To see which ones,
I have a list of lots of different types on the dinosaur
names page, and there you'll see which ones have their own page! If
you just want to see a bunch of pictures of different dinosaurs, check
out my dinosaur pictures gallery. Have
fun!
